What is VITA?
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS
program that trains volunteers to help prepare basic tax returns
for those with low-to-moderate income, individuals with
disabilities, and the elderly taxpayers.

What kind of experience is needed to become a
volunteer?
Only the spirit of volunteerism! No other
experience is required.
No accounting experience needed-Tax software guides
you every step of the way, or you can volunteer to do customer
service.
No liability to volunteers-Free training is provided
beginning as early as December/January and sites are
IRS-approved. The tax preparation service is provided January
through April.
Time commitment is up to you-Evening, daytime and
weekend hours available. Select times that are convenient
for you. Volunteer work hours are flexible, based upon
volunteer's desired commitment.
Multiple locations throughout El Paso County-Choose a
site near where you live or work.

I'm not 21 years old, can I still
volunteer?
Yes, you must be at least 16 years of age to
volunteer.

What does the training consist of?
Training is free and provided by an IRS Instructor.
Classroom, on-line learning and self-study or a combination of
these options are designed to educate and prepare the volunteer
for the tax season.
- All volunteer tests are open book. All reference
and resource materials may be used to complete the test.
Volunteers are asked to complete the test on their own.
- Training for the 2009-2010 tax season will begin
in December and continue through mid January
2010.

When will I begin assisting taxpayers and how many
hours do I need to work?
VITA sites are open Jan. 15 thru April 15.
It is required that you volunteer a minimum of 3 hours per week.

You will assist low income families and individuals
by helping them to claim every tax benefit that they're entitled
to. You can help boost a family's yearly income by up to
30%.
